DB Schenker is the first logistics company to switch its entire LCL volumes with CMA CGM to regular carbon-free production. The company has signed a purchase contract for over 2,500 tons of biofuel with CMA CGM, a global leader in shipping and logistics.

2,500 tons is more than required to transport all LCL. DB Schenker will be able to reach net carbon zero-emission on a well-to-wake basis on the LCL segment, thanks to this overallocation.

By joining forces to offer green container transport, which immediately reduces the environmental footprint of maritime transport, both companies make a significant step towards decarbonizing ocean freight.

DB Schenker customers can book the carbon-zero LCL option with immediate effect and receive a certificate of the emission reduction for their climate balance sheet. The cooperation has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 7,000 tons CO2e well-to-wake, which corresponds with at least 100 percent of the WTW emissions of the LCL containers handled with CMA CGM, making it one of the most significant deals in ocean freight logistics.

CMA CGM continues to invest heavily in research and development alongside its industrial partners to identify the energy sources of the future.”

Biofuel can integrate into regular operations without infrastructure or supply chain adjustments; it is practical and suitable for everyday use. Biofuel is produced from waste materials, such as used cooking oils.

Once more, DB Schenker’s commitment to sustainable development is backed by concrete and tangible actions. Similar to other sustainable products, such as flights with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), DB Schenker’s customers can truly strengthen their decarbonization agenda.

Japanese freight forwarding company Kintetsu World Express, commits to CO2-neutral freight transports with Lufthansa Cargo. Kintetsu World Express will reduce around five percent of its total CO2footprint of transported airfreight with Lufthansa Cargo for one year. Kintetsu World Express has committed to using Sustainable Aviation Fuel in the period from October 2022 to September 2023. In addition, the company has decided to offset the so-called well-to-tank emissions generated during the production and provision of Sustainable Aviation Fuel with the help of certified climate protection projects.

“Climate change is getting more and more obvious and devastating everywhere in the world. As an asset-light freight forwarder, reducing our Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions is key to winning the battle against global warming. And SAF is a rising star. Recently, in our initial response to the recommendations of The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), we declared our intention to actively participate in our partner airlines’ SAF programs. I am delighted and proud to work with our long-time partner Lufthansa Cargo for the sustainable future of the air cargo industry”, states Nobutoshi Torii, President & Chief Executive Officer of Kintetsu World Express.

“We are very proud that we have been able to win Kintetsu World Express, one of our most important customers, to transport their freight with us on a CO2-neutral basis,” says Dorothea von Boxberg, Chief Executive Officer of Lufthansa Cargo AG. “Already today, Sustainable Aviation Fuel offers the opportunity to save around 80 percent of emissions in airfreight transport. That’s why every customer who takes advantage of this opportunity makes a decisive contribution to advancing decarbonization in logistics. Thanks to the commitment of Kintetsu World Express and our other customers who have chosen Sustainable Aviation Fuel, we have already been able to replace around two percent of our annual fossil fuel requirements with Sustainable Aviation Fuel in 2022.”

More climate-friendly flights with SAF

The overarching term for sustainable, biogenic or synthetic kerosene is “Sustainable Aviation Fuel” (SAF). SAF is considered to be the first real alternative to fossil aviation fuel. Currently it is mainly produced from biomass. In the future, “non-biogenic” fuels will also be available; the best-known example is the so-called Power-to-Liquid (PtL) concept based on renewable electricity, water and CO2. SAF enables an almost closed CO2 cycle: While fossil fuels release CO2 that has been bound for millions of years and the current level of CO2 in the atmosphere is increasing, the use of SAF in the combustion process releases only as much CO2as was bound immediately before in the manufacturing process.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is the key to CO2-neutral air traffic and can be fed into regular flight operations without infrastructure adjustments. There are different production processes and different feedstock materials for SAF. The SAF currently used by Lufthansa Cargo is produced in the HEFA process (Hydroprocessed Esters & Fatty Acids) from biogenic residual materials, for example from used cooking oils. It does not conflict with food cultivation, as only forestry, agricultural or gastronomical waste is used. Lufthansa Cargo offers SAF via the Lufthansa Group from the world’s leading SAF manufacturers. Since September 2021, all Lufthansa Cargo customers have been able to have their freight transported in a CO₂-neutral manner by opting for the Sustainable Choice add-on service.

Additional offsetting through myclimate projects leads to complete CO2neutrality

In addition to using Sustainable Aviation Fuel, Kintetsu World Express relies on additional offsetting of greenhouse gases generated in the provision of SAF. Lufthansa Cargo offers its customers a selection of ten carbon offset projects curated by the Lufthansa Group from the non-profit organization myclimate, which applies only the strictest, independent quality standards such as Gold Standard and Plan Vivo when selecting and designing carbon offset projects. With the help of the high-quality offset projects, fossil energy sources are replaced by renewable energy or energy-efficient technologies. Another option is to protect endangered forests, whose trees extract CO2 from the atmosphere over their lifetime, convert it and store it as carbon.

The amount of emissions saved from the projects is calculated and can be passed on to companies in the form of emission reduction credits – so-called certificates – in quantities appropriate to their needs. On the basis of the certified CO2 savings or reductions, it is therefore possible to offset CO2 emissions that arise, for example, in the course of freight transport. Another advantage is that the compensation mechanism via high-quality projects not only involves climate protection measures that demonstrably save CO2, but the projects also always bring local benefits for the population and the environment. Jobs are created, infrastructures improved or health risks reduced, biodiversity protected or educational opportunities improved.

A.P. Moller – Maersk announces that it has ordered a further six large ocean-going vessels that can sail on green methanol. The six vessels will be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries and have a nominal capacity of approx. 17,000 containers. They will replace existing capacity in the Maersk fleet.

“Our customers are looking to us to decarbonise their supply chains, and these six vessels able to operate on green methanol will further accelerate the efforts to offer our customers climate neutral transport. Global action is needed in this decade in order to meet the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to a 1.5°C temperature rise.” said Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO of Fleet & Strategic Brands at Maersk.

Maersk has set a net-zero emissions target for 2040 across the entire business and has also set tangible near-term targets for 2030 to ensure significant progress. This includes a 50% reduction in emissions per transported container in the Maersk Ocean fleet compared to 2020 and a principle of only ordering newbuilt vessels that can be operated on green fuels.

19 green methanol vessels on order

With the order, Maersk has in total ordered 19 vessels with dual-fuel engines able to operate on green methanol.

“Green methanol is the best scalable green fuel solution for this decade, and we are excited to see several other shipowners choosing this path. It adds further momentum to the rapid scaling of availability needed to bring down the premium on green methanol and accelerate the evolution of climate neutral shipping.” said Palle Laursen, Chief Fleet & Technical Officer at Maersk.

Benchmarked against conventional fuel capabilities, additional capital expenditure for the methanol dual-fuel capability is in the range of 8-12%, which is an improvement compared to when Maersk ordered eight vessels with the same technology last year.

The six 17,000 TEU vessels are all to be delivered in 2025 and will sail under the flag of Denmark. They all come as part of Maersk’s ongoing fleet renewal program and their capacity will replace an equal amount of capacity reaching end-of-life and leaving the Maersk managed fleet. When all 19 vessels on order are deployed and have replaced older vessels, they will generate annual CO2 emissions savings of around 2.3 million tonnes.

Maersk further reiterates its strategy of maintaining a fleet capacity at a maximum of 4.3 million TEU, as a combination of Maersk managed and time-chartered vessels.

DHL Freight, one of the leading providers of road freight services in Europe, is now introducing the GoGreen Plus service to reduce CO2 emissions for road transport. This is achieved through carbon insetting, which is a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases through investments in green road transportation technologies and fuels. In contrast to offsetting, which helps to compensate carbon emissions through climate protection projects worldwide, insetting focuses on decarbonizing road freight by investing in low- and zero emission technologies and fuels such as electric vehicles, biogas or hydrotreated vegetable oil.

With the introduction of GoGreen Plus at DHL Freight, we at Deutsche Post DHL Group can now offer our customers carbon-neutral transport services across all modes of transport, in line with the Paris COP 21 targets to limit global warming. DHL Freight’s sustainable technology roadmap defines targeted climate-smart solutions such as increasing carbon efficiency by using data analytics, investing in bridge technologies and more long-term solutions like hydrogen trucks, which lead to clean road operations and services. In recent years, DHL Freight has already pioneered numerous green road freight projects, such as, since 2018, the insetting product Skicka Grönt in Sweden, which have helped to significantly reduce carbon emissions by introducing electric, Bio-LNG or –CNG and HVO trucks to the fleet.

The GoGreen Plus service is part of Deutsche Post DHL Group’s sustainability goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. It is based on the displacement principle: The more customers book the service, the more alternative fuel or clean technology is used, thus making transport chains greener every day. DHL Freight’s customers are part of a journey that aims to make transportation as sustainable as possible. By offering detailed carbon reports, DHL Freight provides customers transparency and insight into the amounts of emissions avoided. At the same time, the emission reductions also help DHL Freight’s customers to work towards their own climate targets.

In line with its sustainability strategy and the goal of net-zero emissions logistics by 2050, Deutsche Post DHL Group aims to offer a green alternative for all products and services across all divisions. This is why also other divisions such as DHL Global Forwarding and Post + Parcel Germany introduced the GoGreen Plus service to their customers. The product offering GoGreen Plus is part of the Group’s mid-term sustainability roadmap for 2030 and contributes to the sub-target of having at least 30 percent of fuel requirements covered by sustainable fuels. To reduce CO2 emissions in line with the Paris Climate Agreement, the Group will spend €7 billion in sustainable fuel and clean technologies by 2030.
