The modernization of the van carrier fleet at the Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG container terminal in Tollerort is progressing: eight new van carriers with hybrid drives went into operation there in April and have been transporting containers between ships in an environmentally friendly manner ever since , warehouse, train station and truck gate. They consume significantly less fuel than their predecessors and therefore emit correspondingly fewer emissions.

Including these eight new devices, the hybrid VC fleet at Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) now comprises 18 devices. The principle of the technology used is simple: the VC stores excess energy, for example when braking or lowering the load, in a powerful lithium-ion battery. When driving, the vehicle uses this energy from the battery. This significantly reduces the load on the combustion engine.

Each hybrid VC saves more than 30 percent fuel per operating hour compared to the diesel-electric predecessor models. This means that the eight new hybrid VCs can save around 200,000 liters of diesel per year. Correspondingly , CO 2 emissions are also falling sharply by around 530 tons per year.

CTT Managing Director Robin Steyer explains the new hybrid VC fleet: “With the modern hybrid van carriers, we are lowering our energy costs and reducing emissions at the same time. They are further proof that HHLA consistently relies on the latest technology and intelligent solutions. The company, the environment and the employees benefit from this.”

Prior to this, HHLA tested the devices themselves in demanding 24/7 port operations in all weather conditions: the first two hybrid VC prototypes started testing at the CTT in January 2019. At the time, they were another step taken by HHLA to convert their large equipment to more and more environmentally friendly technologies.

The new devices thus also contribute to HHLA’s sustainability strategy and make a contribution to achieving the ambitious goals: By 2030, HHLA wants to halve its CO 2 emissions compared to 2018 and by 2040 it wants to operate completely climate-neutral.
