Acquisition of Baltic shortsea operator once again extends regional links into Samskip’s pan-European multimodal network. European transport group Samskip has broadened its Baltic operations by acquiring shortsea specialist Sea Connect. The Klaipeda-based shipping company, which will be renamed Samskip Sea Connect, offers shortsea services connecting Russia, Lithuania, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands.

Sea Connect operates three 1A Ice Class container vessels calling twice a week at St. Petersburg and Rotterdam, weekly at Hamburg and at Aarhus sub inducement.

“This acquisition strengthens our position in Russia, in the Netherlands and across a range of key Baltic ports in between,” said Kari-Pekka Laaksonen, Chief Executive Officer, Samskip. “It enhances services for Samskip’s shortsea customers focusing on growth opportunities in Russia and adds opportunities for importers and exporters within the region to secure cost-efficient and sustainable multimodal connections farther afield.”

“Sea Connect has emerged as an exceptionally lean, robust operation offering reliability in quay-to-quay and door-to-door services,” Laaksonen added. Its acquisition consolidates Samskip’s commitments to the Baltic region, following its acquisition of Norlines in 2017 and the founding of a separate Finnish entity earlier this year.

Both Sea Connect Managing Director, Viacheslav Puzemskij and SCS-Russia Managing Director, Anton Larkin remain to play full roles within the new organization, working with Johan van der Pijl, Samskip Regional Director Baltics and Russia.

“This is a win-win for our customers which brings together Sea Connect’s route-specific focus with the opportunities created by Samskip’s extensive multimodal network and values,” said Viacheslav Puzemskij. “Integrating our company with Samskip aligns with the strategic goal we set ourselves in forming Sea Connect to evolve as a trusted partner and grow to serve the full range of customer needs in the Baltic and Russian markets. We assure our present and future clients that a customer-orientated culture will remain in the company, as our most important value.”

Laaksonen anticipates particular growth in unitized volumes connecting Russia and the Baltic states through Rotterdam by rail, barges, vessels all over the Europe, and also greater deployment of Samskip’s expert refrigerated cargo services in St Petersburg. “Russian exporters and importers are likely to be attracted by new possibilities to penetrate markets to the west and south using Samskip’s network of shortsea, rail, inland barge and road services,” he added. Sea Connect’s feeder links with deep sea carriers would also remain.

In line with its drive to enhance connectivity for customers, Pacific International Lines introduced the PIL Intermodal Services, which offers train, truck and barge services to complement its container shipping services. The PIL Intermodal Services are available across PIL’s existing network in Intra-Asia, Africa, Middle East, Latin America and Oceania.

The aim of the new intermodal services is to empower customers by providing them with more options of how they would like their cargoes to be transported. Customers can choose to save time and resources in managing their cargoes by entrusting PIL to provide transportation services from the points of origin to the final destinations, or they could opt to arrange their own last-mile transportation. PIL’s intermodal solutions are also highly customisable with dedicated train and barge services.

Mr Lars Kastrup, CEO, PIL, said, “We have seen growing market demand for intermodal services in recent years. With our strong network of global offices, agencies and partners, we are able to offer good point-to-point connectivity across sea and land for our customers. Our intermodal solutions will be well supported by our digital services including electronic Bill of Lading, and in the near future, GPS tracking. This solution is also aligned with our goal to reduce the overall carbon footprint of our operations and that of our customers.”

The PIL Intermodal Service is now available in Africa, Australia, Cambodia, Guatemala, India, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and China. PIL plans to roll out its intermodal service to other parts of the world in the near term.”

The Intermodal Marketplace of Port of Antwerp-Bruges took place and on the occasion of this event, there was a unique tour by train in the port area in Antwerp.

More than 500 participants

The Intermodal Marketplace of Port of Antwerp-Bruges took place in the Handelsbeurs in Antwerp. At this event, Port of Antwerp-Bruges brings together providers of transport by rail, barge and short-sea shipping with shipping companies, forwarders and shippers.

Fifty European rail, inland shipping and shortsea operators presented their offerings and European shippers, forwarders and logistics companies discovered the newest connections for their cargo. More than 500 participants were present.

During an interview, BASF and Caterpillar emphasized that the Port of Antwerp-Bruges is well equipped to receive all types of transport and goods. A smooth flow of cargo is important for a high-performance supply chain. That is why we are constantly expanding the range of our alternative modes of transport. Rail, inland shipping, shortsea and night logistics are the means of transport of the future. The involvement of all actors is a must for a sustainable supply chain.

Unique tour in the port area

On the occasion of this event, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Infrabel, NMBS and Lineas organized a unique tour by train in the port area in Antwerp. More than 300 participants were introduced to this aspect of the port in a unique way during a three-hour ‘rail experience’.

The train, which picked up participants in Bruges and Ghent, made a stop in Antwerp Central.

After the train ride, the participants went to the Intermodal Marketplace.

In August 2022, the logistics operator Ruscon, part of the Delo Group of Companies, successfully launched a multimodal container service from Japan to Kazakhstan.

Delivery of goods is carried out by ship from the port of Kobe, Japan to the port of Vostochny, after which it goes by rail to the Almaty-1 station. Departures occur with a frequency of 1 time per month. Travel time for the marine component of the service is 5-6 days.
Through transportation in containers from Nakhodka is carried out by Ruscon together with PJSC TransContainer, which is also part of the Group. Ruscon customers have access to door-to-door delivery and forwarding services.

With the launch of the new service, customers have received an additional opportunity to more flexibly plan and organize uninterrupted cargo deliveries through the Far East.

“The development of communication with Southeast Asia is one of the top priorities for Ruscon. Taking into account the interest in expanding the territories of presence and developing new routes, we intend to concentrate our efforts to create optimal and high-quality customer services in the region,” said Marat Akhmatdinov, General Director of Ruscon Asia LLP.
