UPS, a global leader in logistics, global packaging experts Sealed Air (SEE), Smurfit Kappa and top UK distributor Macfarlane Packaging are today launching a new range of packaging specially designed for shipping individual bottles of spirits and wine, to help producers in the UK and Ireland expand their markets and reach new customers.

“Ecommerce presents a huge opportunity for drinks producers wanting to grow their businesses, as a fifth of alcohol consumers in key export markets are already purchasing their favourite brands online[1],” said Mark Vale, President, UPS UK & Ireland. “We designed this new packaging to simplify the process and bring peace of mind that these fragile products will arrive safely at their destination. By combining this specialised packaging with UPS’s smart global logistics network, brokerage expertise and service coverage, distillers can focus on their passion and sharing their savoir-faire with the world.”

With alcohol e-sales in the UK and Ireland experiencing double digit growth[2], this packaging addresses the challenge of how to safely pack and ship individual bottles that come in a range of shapes and sizes. It has been developed and tested by UPS, in partnership with leading packaging companies Smurfit Kappa and Sealed Air, and is distributed by Macfarlane Packaging. Alcohol producers shipping with UPS benefit from damage cover when they use this UPS Approved packaging.[3]

“At the moment, people are ordering more goods from online retailers so that they can stay at home,” said Laurel Granville, Marketing Director, Macfarlane Packaging. “There is a growing demand for bottle packs as there is a need to effectively pack and distribute these products without damage. At Macfarlane, we offer our clients the most innovative and environmentally friendly protective packaging options for their businesses and we are proud to work with UPS to offer this pack to ecommerce customers.”

There are four customisable versions of the new one-bottle packs that can accommodate most of the wine and spirits bottles on the market. The packaging is also fully recyclable. It features the Korrvu® Retention technology by Sealed Air that allows the bottle to be suspended in transparent film, the pack can be used for display in a shop or bar, or sent to family or friends as a gift.

UPS also provides a direct-to-consumer wine shipping export service from selected countries in Europe to destinations in 60 countries across North America, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Africa, in addition to its global business-to-business alcohol shipping services.

Youredi and HUB logistics announce a collaboration agreement to use Youredi integration services to give HUB logistics an advantage in the growing and demanding logistics market. The logistics industry has a growing need to digitalize processes and speed up the data connectivity with customers, stakeholders, and markets.

HUB logistics is one of the fastest-growing logistics vendors in Nordics and are a step ahead of the logistics market in digitalization. They have invested heavily in their automated logistics center in Finland and data connectivity is one of the major development areas in their digitalization projects.

Youredi delivers a managed service enabling agility, industry expertise and cost-efficiency for the data connectivity with external parties. Youredi’s modern technology platform and managed service replaces the existing global EDI VAN-network provider.

Jaakko Elovaara, CEO of Youredi, said: “This is again a milestone demonstrating our go-to-market speed, expertise in logistics integrations and the built-in use cases we can deliver with our iPaaS solution. As we are one of the leading vendors in the Supply Chain and Logistics, I believe that these customer success stories further strengthen our position in the global market. Older solution providers have challenges to match the current needs of customers in terms of flexibility, agility, speed and cost predictability. We know that more and more of the supply chain and logistics customers require the factors of speed, scale, and efficiency in their integration needs and the only way to deliver it to them is by having a top-notch team of industry experts. This is again a big achievement for our team.”

Liebherr’s new pallet handling system with turning and milling centres

High performance and the use of state-of-the-art technologies in production play an important role at Liebherr. With this in mind, Liebherr Components has introduced a new pallet handling system (PHS) at its production site in Biberach (Germany). The PHS is linked to two turning and milling centres for the production of powerful drive units and rope winches.

“We have replaced our previous machining centres on site to be able to cover the high product variance with greater flexibility”, explains Florian Kraljic, manager of the cubic parts department at Liebherr in Biberach. The new machining centres, however, need to do more than just milling, they should also be able to turn work pieces and connect to the PHS. The concept behind the idea is to manufacture raw and finished parts in just one sequence – flexibly and around the clock.

The new PHS allows a large number of work pieces to be fully machined in a single work sequence. With an appropriate tool management, two machines can produce in parallel. Different components can, thus, be manufactured simultaneously. All this allows a high variance of components – 67 machine pallets or chucks and 62 material pallets can be stored in the system. If necessary, the system is further extendable. However, the size of the system is impressive already now. Together with the PHS, the machines take up the space of half a football field. The turning and milling centres are equipped with very large tool magazines with each machine holding around 700 tools.

Heavy parts, lightweight chucks

If the work pieces are particularly heavy, the chucks should ideally be lighter to exploit the maximum loading weight of the handling system and machining centres. This balancing act has been a success due to the chucks supplied by Röhm GmbH. “We can machine connecting parts, end plates and cable drums made of steel or cast iron with a diameter of up to 1,200 millimetres and a weight of up to 1,200 kilograms in the machines”, says Florian Kraljic.

Great benefits in practice

In addition to the production of parts for Liebherr own components, the company also acts as a contract manufacturer in the market. Therefore, Liebherr attaches great importance to flexible production and completing manufacturing orders with batch sizes from one to larger sizes. The implemented vertical integration has made a special working time model possible: after eight hours, the system continues to produce components for four hours without an operator, followed then by another eight-hour shift and a subsequent four-hour production without an operator. This enables Liebherr to reduce the burden of night shifts on the employees. After a raw part has been clamped, no further individual machining processes with time-consuming re-clamping during the machine cycle are required. All this reduces the physical strain of the machine operator, allows work that is easier on the joints and creates ergonomic setting stations. The worker can now complete all his work at the setting stations at ground level, at a workplace freely accessible from all sides.
